To be honest, I'd be thrilled to see a good, realistic rally sim, but I remain cynical at this point.

You've got a huge amount of work cut out for your team.  Yes I know that your approach produces an accurate model of the track, but that is just the beginning of the rally experience...also a long stage would be a huge amount of data!  Getting the correct pace notes will be an issue, as will building a software engine that gives a reasonable feedback to the "drivers".

There are currently two great pieces of software, ironically both named after great British rally drivers who have subsequently died.

For a true sim, there's Richard Burns Rally - OK it's a dated engine, but the recent graphical plugins have brought it up to date visually, and there's nothing out there that can touch the accuracy of the simulation itself.  Given some of the fantastic modelling being done with Bob's Track Builder (see the Sweet Lamb stage from Rally GB for example - there are videos on YouTube) you've got a real challenge on your hands.  Having said this, RBR is not for the casual gamer, nor for the faint hearted.  It's more for the Sim fan who is prepared to build a custom PC, tweak with their software settings, and keep driving the stages until they get the times they want.

For the more casual gamer there's Colin McRae Dirt and Dirt II (known simply as Dirt and Dirt II in North America) which looks stunning but is relatively easy to learn, more forgiving, and a hell of a lot of fun...having said that, I'm not sure it is capable of handling a 30+ km section...a necessity in any attempt to handle a real world WRC event.

All I can say is the best of luck to you.  I'll be watching and hoping you can pull this off in my lounge!

You obviously understand we are capable on 100's of km of stages.... with the logs, ice berms, telephone boxes crowds all in, as it is in reality.

We arent even using 64 bit, multi threading accross a network yet.

This is video technology.. complex maybe but video never the less.

We will likely shoot at half pace car speed, immediately prior to the pace car on the stage of the rally.... so if theres snow on the Welsh Rally, then there will be snow on our data. Simple colour detection combined with LIDAR can then be used to work out the friction properties.

It will never directly take on the console games but we could generate an interesting experience

I'm certainly up for the experience, and looking forward to seeing how you implement it.

Did you get an opportunity to try it on this years Rally GB stages last weekend?  I'd be very interested to see how that runs against the WRC video feeds.

We didnt capture the Rally GB although we were invited to the event.

The Product would integrate with the feeds as it would be used to create feed similar to virtual spectator but with television pictures.

One problem with broadcasting rally is that you cant broadcast television pictures from conventional angles or incar shots from cars racing against each other.

If either world rally series want it then its available.

If you want this type of experience, with either an advanced or arcade physics theme model then please support us.
